Segment routing has experienced a real success story in carrier backbones, but also in the infrastructures of larger company networks. While MPLS-based implementation of segment routing was predominantly used in the past, the advantages of SRv6, the variant for IPv6 infrastructures, are currently being increasingly recognized.
In fact, there is even a noticeable trend towards replacing MPLS with SRv6 in backbones. One piece of good news is that all of the performance features that can be used for MPLS and that we have come to love are also available with SRv6, such as scalable traffic engineering and fast rerouting, as well as the use of an SDN controller for automation.
SRv6 gains additional potential because it only requires a routed IPv6 network. This allows greater coverage to be achieved and the underlying IPv6 routing to be optimized.
