An IPv6 migration is not just a protocol issue, but usually a complex transformation project that affects architecture, operation and governance in equal measure. Sound knowledge of protocols - such as Neighbor Discovery, SLAAC, routing or ICMPv6 - is of course the necessary basis for making viable strategic decisions. Without this understanding, neither security implications nor design options can be realistically evaluated.
However, this workshop deliberately focuses on a different aspect: the focus here is on target architecture, migration paths and concrete implementation.

- Drivers and constraints for migration (cloud, providers, customers, IPv4 scarcity, security/compliance, modernization, etc.)
- Migration goals/options (permanent dual-stack, IPv6-first, comprehensive IPv6-only, IPv6-only core, etc.)
- Assess current status and maturity level – define IPv6 readiness of various products and systems
- Addressing concept (prefix strategy, hierarchical design, ULA vs. GUA, numbering logic, etc.)
- Migration models and transition architectures
- Security architecture

This workshop is aimed at anyone who is involved in the actual migration of a company network towards IPv6.

Knowledge Prerequisites

Solid basic knowledge of IPv6, such as can be acquired in our course IPv6 - Addressing, Routing and IPv4 Interworking or even better PowerPackage IPv6 - Addressing, Routing, Interworking, Security, is a prerequisite for this workshop.

Course Objective

After attending the course, you will have a concrete idea of what an IPv6 migration, the migration target and the path to it could look like in your own infrastructure. You will know how to set up an address concept and understand the security and operational implications. You now have a rough roadmap for the implementation of your own migration.
